Question: When is black really green?
Answer: When we use Blackle.com as our search engine and help save the planet.
Blackle.com is a search engine that displays white text on a black screen. Black screens don’t require the same energy as light colored screens. In the 2002 University of California, Berkley publication “Energy Use and Power Levels in New Monitors and Personal Computers”, Roberson et al report that "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen."
Heap Media used this principle to create Blackle.com, a Google Custom Search Engine. As of 1:00pm, November 12, 2009 1,545,617.001 Watt hours have been saved. Small steps to save energy can add up to big results. Won’t you join the blackle movement and be green?
